There is a foundational truth that we must understand right from the start, or we won't be successful in finding freedom from impurity: in order to break free from impurity, our motives must be right.

And what is the "proper motive," you ask? The proper biblical motive for gaining victory over impurity must be the glory of God.

"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" 1 Corinthians 10:31

The first teaching of this course is that we must have God’s glory as our motive for finding freedom from impurity.

Most people have their own glory as the motive for finding freedom; they want to get free in order to feel better about themselves, save their marriage, or be more productive at work.

This is actually self-worship, which should have no place in the heart of the Christian who professes to worship God. God does all things for His own glory (Psalm 21:5;Psalm 63:2; Psalm 79:9; Proverbs 25:27; John 7:18).

As we also begin to work for the glory of God, instead of for our own glory, we become people of truth—and we inevitably find freedom from habitual sin.

During my years of slavery to pornography, I would try one method after another, one book or support group after another, always seeking the knowledge which would free me.

I wanted to feel better; I wanted others to see me as a spiritual giant; I wanted to have a better self-image. But looking back, I see that these motives were all wrong: it was all about me.

It was for my own glory, and that’s why it never lasted.

Question 1

问题1

Have you discovered that, in the past, you may have desired freedom for the wrong reasons? What were those reasons?

From here on, we will intersperse some answers from other course members and leaders at Setting Captives Free. You may identify with their thoughts and answers. All answers are used by permission.

One of our students at Setting Captives Free wrote, "My desire for freedom was mostly the result of pornography, self-gratification, and immorality not doing for me what I wanted it to do.

It wasn't satisfying me; in fact, it was leaving me more guilt-ridden than ever. I wanted something that would fill the emptiness inside—something that was lasting and wouldn't leave me feeling guilty and shameful.

My focus for wanting freedom was all about me. I knew I needed to be rid of this sin, but what I didn't know was that my eventual freedom would be an incredible opportunity for me to glorify Christ.

Today, when I talk about the power of life-dominating sin being broken in my life, the only One Who gets the glory is God. He met the need of my heart, and now I can glorify Him, rather than myself, with my life!"

Shon Bruellman, The Way of Purity's Executive Director, wrote this answer the first time he came across this teaching: "This is an interesting point you bring up here. When I first read it, I was offended.

I thought ‘WHAT?? The first lesson, and you tell me that my motives for finding freedom are wrong?’ But then, as I sat here and went through my list of reasons, I can see that it is for my own benefit and my own glory.

I want to be able to appear as a godly man who has no sin in his life. I want to be free so that my life would be easier and without hindrances anymore.

As much as I want to say that my motives are to glorify Christ with my freedom, I have to admit that my motives are purely for myself and how freedom would benefit me. Hmmm... maybe that's why the chains have continued to hold me fast for over 20 years of my life!

This question is basically saying that I am to get my eyes off of what this course will do for ME, and instead focus on how God can be glorified through me."

Mentor Robert writes, "Yeah, I wanted to be free because of the guilt I was experiencing, the ‘discomfort’ that came because of my habitual sins.

My motivations were all self-centered and I have been looking within myself to find the freedom and answers, but failed."

Friend, if we set out to quit pornography, adultery, or any other form of sexual impurity for our own glory, we cannot expect God's assistance.

Since God is the greatest good, He sets out to work all things for His own glory; if we seek to find freedom for our own glory, we are at cross-purposes with God.

He will not share His glory with another (Isaiah 48:11)This is a critical concept, so let’s look at an illustration in Judges 7:2

And the LORD said to Gideon, 'The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, 'My own hand has saved me.'" Judges 7:2

Note that God had to reduce the size of Gideon's army so that, when they won the battle, Israel would not claim glory for themselves.

This might be the very reason we've not been successful in finding permanent freedom from impurity in the past!

Perhaps God didn't want us to boast in ourselves, or in a certain program, or in following the advice of some guru. God desires His glory to be great in our salvation (Psalm 21:5).

God works for His own glory! This is why we must settle this issue of motivation right here in the beginning.

Is our motive in desiring to break free to honor Him, or ourselves? Are we working with Him, or are we at cross-purposes with Him?

Now that we understand our purpose, be assured that there is great hope in having the glory of God as our motivation! If we have a purpose in our hearts to glorify God, then we are working in concert with God, and He will enable us to do what we seek to do.

The proper motive (seeking God's glory) will ensure our success. God Himself comes to our aid, so that He will be glorified.

"Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" 1 Corinthians 10:31

Question 2

问题2

What should be the Christian's motive for finding freedom from bondage to impurity?

It's important to understand that breaking free from impurity is honoring to the Lord. He is glorified in the daily choice we make to turn away from gratifying our flesh.

This is not to say that all who are not involved in pornography, and all who abstain from masturbation (self-gratification) and adultery are glorifying God.

Obviously, such is not the case—there are many people who aren’t involved in the things with which you and I have struggled but who are living their lives for their own glory.

But a Christian's motivation must be to honor the Lord in everything.

Some time ago, I recognized that I had been trying to break free from impurity for the wrong motives.

God convicted my heart.

I remember when I first confessed to Him that I had been seeking freedom for my own selfish reasons—it was a time of deep sorrow in my heart, for I saw that I was attempting to rob God of some of His glory.

I remember kneeling by my hotel room bed and praying something like this: "Father, I have gone about seeking freedom all wrong. In the past, I've been promoting my own glory, but now I see that I am to do everything for Your glory.

No wonder I've not been successful. Would you please forgive me for these wrong motives? Would you please change my heart and help me to desire your glory above all else?"

That prayer was a turning point for me. It was really the start of a new life, as I was now beginning to seek the glory of the Lord ahead of everything else.

To be honest, at times the flesh still gets in the way and I become distracted again—but overall I believe the primary purpose of my heart is to honor the Lord now.

I want to be able to say with the psalmist in Psalm 115:1:

Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us,

But to Your name give glory,

Because of Your mercy,

Because of Your truth. Psalm 115:1

Question 3

问题3

Does the above prayer make you want to confess something to God? Have you been seeking your own glory, attempting freedom for the wrong reasons?

If so, you can use this space to write out a prayer of repentance to God. Yes, these prayers are personal, just between you and God—but if you'd like to write yours here, we will join with you in praying for new motives and new desires in you.

As I mentioned earlier, there is real hope for permanent freedom when our motive is the glory of God.

If we begin to focus on the glory of God, we will inevitably change. Let's look at the Scriptures that teach this principle. Consider the following passages and answer the questions below:

16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:16-18

Question 4

问题4

According to verse 18 above, what is it that enables us to be transformed?

This is starting to get good, isn't it? Look at the hope we should have for real change as we focus on the glory of God.

According to the above passage, as we behold the glory of the Lord, we are being transformed into the same image; that is, into Christ-likeness. As our motives become the glory of God, and as we begin to focus on the glory of God, we become transformed!

Bill Stroud, a Setting Captives Free mentor, writes: "It is when we change from looking at ourselves with our imperfections, sinfulness, and helplessness and turn to the Lord Jesus and see and depend on His power and perfection, that we can expect a transformation to begin."Setting Captives Free

Question 5

问题5

If you have tried finding freedom before but failed, according to today's teaching, why did you fail?

Robert writes: "Because it was all about me; my sin, my guilt, my discomfort, my darkness - instead of beholding Jesus and His glory, His purpose for my life, and His grace."

Question 6

问题6

Are you now sensing a hope that you can truly change? If so, upon what is that hope based?

Next, notice what the glory of God really is. The glory of God is multi-faceted and difficult to reduce to words. I feel inadequate to even try. And yet, God has not left us in the dark as to what His glory is. Read this passage of Scripture:

"1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,

2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they." Hebrews 1:1-4

1 神既在古时藉着众先知多次多方地晓谕列祖;

Notice that verse 3 above calls "the Son," Jesus Christ, "the brightness of His glory." This is important. When the above Scriptures direct us to focus on the glory of the Lord, what they are really saying is to see this glory in Jesus Christ, God's Son. What's the connection to our struggle?

It's simple: if we desire to be transformed, we must focus on God's glory, and God's glory is wrapped up in the Person of Jesus Christ. The Way of Purity course seeks to focus our attention on Christ so that, in fixing our eyes on Him, we will become transformed into His image.

Question 7

问题7

Where is the glory of God seen most clearly?

In closing, we must have proper motives for everything in our lives—and that includes finding freedom from pornography and sexual impurity of all kinds.

This course will test our motives and confront us with scriptural truth. We'll work to focus our attention on Jesus Christ and in doing so, we'll inevitably become transformed. And this is our ultimate goal, isn't it?

Question 8

问题8

Please summarize today's teaching in your own words. Describe what you have learned, any changes being made in you, and how you will apply what you have studied today.

Bill writes, "The lesson teaches that we are to change our focus from self to the Lord Jesus. I have learned that, to walk in freedom, I must walk with the Lord Jesus, looking to him for guidance and power.

It is through such a relationship with the Lord Jesus that will bring about a transformation that will one day be complete. I am committed to keeping my focus on Him moment by moment. "

Robert writes, "I have learned that the answer is not found in me, so that is not the place to look; I know that the problem is within me, so no use going there. The answer is found in Jesus and beholding Him."

Shon writes, "I came to Setting Captives Free doubtful of what I would find since I had been to psychiatrists, therapists and hypnotists and assumed that I would receive similar counsel here. However, this teaching is all new.

The advice I had received from secular counselors has been to focus on me and my needs, but when I started to see how it was for the glory of God that He frees the captives, my whole life changed.

I understood how it was for HIM I am to seek freedom and now, several years later, I still walk in victory over porn and sexual impurity!"

Mentor Craig wrote this when he first read today's lesson:

"Today's teaching was very insightful. I've realized right off the bat that the reason I've failed up until now is because my motives have been all wrong. Indeed, my wrong focus is the problem at hand, and it needs to change to the right focus, the Person of Jesus Christ, who is the Radiance of God's Glory.

I pray the Lord will hear my cries and prayers of desperation and deliver me from pornography and masturbation, as I repent of this horrible sexual sin and, for the first time, attempt to glorify God. This first lesson has also convicted me that, while I may have knowledge of Scripture, for I've read many of these same verses prior to today, that knowledge without application is, well, useless.

It is not how much of God's Word I know, it is how much of God's Word I live every moment of every day."

Question 9

问题9

Friend, please share with us any final thoughts you may have. How may we pray for you? Your mentor will read everything you write and is committed to praying for you.

Friend, as you contemplate continuing on in this course, there is something that must be done, without which there is no hope of real or permanent freedom:

you must rid yourself of any and all sources of pornography, or anything else that causes you to stumble. Many of us have become so accustomed to pornography that, unless we cut it off, we will return to it out of habit.

Throw away the magazines, shut off the cable, erase all history of pornography websites, cut off access to pornography newsgroups, destroy phone numbers of adulterous or other sinful relationships, do whatever it takes to rid your house, car, and life of pornography and all impurity.

Enjoy this "cutting off"—have fun with it! Stomp on it, burn it, drown it in a lake and laugh as it sinks. This is the first step to freedom.

"And I said to them, 'Each of you, get rid of the vile images you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God'" Ezekiel 20:7

Question 10

问题10

Will you trash all access to pornography right now?

Yes是  No否

Question 11

问题11

Please take a moment and tell us how you are doing today:

Thoughts to ponder for Day 1:

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:13

From here on, you will be asked accountability questions at the bottom of each lesson. We are doing this to help keep you accountable for purity. Please do only one lesson per day and answer the accountability questions based on the time since your last lesson.

The accountability question, "Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?" may be confusing, so I will explain what we mean by it.

Sexual immorality is anything impure, but it involves physical acts rather than thoughts.

The thinking of pornographic thoughts is typical for those who are new to this course, but they usually begin to go away over the next several months if the biblical principles in this course are followed. So we are not talking about thoughts.

Rather, we are asking you about any specific acts of immorality committed, such as prostitution, homosexuality, inappropriate physical touching, etc.

We are also asking if you've given in to lust (in actions like staring inappropriately), or if you've done any physical act that stirs up lust.

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor" Luke 4:18-19

Finally, you may be interested in having your spouse take the companion course called "A United Front" here at Setting Captives Free. Here is what one graduate of A United Front said:

A few months ago I discovered that my husband of 42 years had been going to see prostitutes (he found them over Craigs List on the internet) and I also discovered that for years he had been meeting men at peep shows and committing nasty behavior.

I was devastated.

My husband was actually discovered in this infidelity by our oldest granddaughter and my daughter who read an e-mail that he left on a computer. Because of the way he was exposed, I did have other members of the family aware of the situation.

I would have never wanted to share this type of information with them, but God knew I needed the back-up of my family to help me through.

From the beginning, I ask the Lord to help me and show me the action to take. I believed that I had Biblical reasons to divorce my husband, but I kept seeking God because I wanted to make sure I had the best solution ordained by God.

As soon as my husband was discovered, he begged for my forgiveness and declared that he hated his secret life and would never do it again.

My husband and I each went to Christian counselors.

The counselor recommended that I take this course.

So, I began the long process of digesting and considering the lesson plans. I took much longer than 60 days, but I continued on.

At times in the course I was angry at what I read....I believed that the course misused some scriptures about submission to husbands and took the scriptures out of context. I almost stopped the course several times.

My mentor was great and walked me through it all. She counseled me to take the good part of the course and leave the rest. As I continued the course, something great happened to me.

I began to see my own sin and failures in our marriage. As I accepted these as my own sin and failure, asked forgiveness and cast them on the Lord, I was free. The course has been a tremendous help to me.

As to my husband, I am so thrilled to report that he is a changed man. He has become all that I ever hoped he would be as the spiritual leader of the home. For most of his adult life, he had doubted that there was a God, even though he went to church with me.

He now prays daily (alone and he comes and prays for me on his own initiative), he reads the Bible daily and shares with me what he reads; he has become a man of God in a way that is truly beyond my expectations.

After 42 years of dealing with the stubbornness of his doubt as to the reality of God in our daily lives, I had lost faith that he would change.

However, as his sin and sexual addiction advanced to this terrible place where he went to a secret life of illicit sex, where he wallowed in the dregs of life, he reached the end of himself, and he then rose up and was changed completely through the power of God.

I must say that he had 3 or 4 slips during the first few months after he decided to change for good. God allowed me to know of these slips each time.

They were the hardest thing for me to deal with. Somehow God gave me the grace to go forward and the course helped me see what I should do in the situations. We never separated although we were so close; my husband kept leaving the choice to me but he begged me to let him stay.

Anyway, long story made short, God is amazing and His love and compassion never leave us, and His perfect plan has been played out to bring my husband and I up from a fiery pit onto steady, solid, ground.

My husband and I are closer and happier than we have ever been. This course, and especially my mentor, helped me tremendously.

My mentor always seemed to know just what to say to me. I looked forward to hearing from her and checked my e-mail often to see what she had to say. Thank you SCF for this course and program.

Next, there is an excellent Bible reading plan which you can use to read through Scripture ( ) in one year. If you would like to download this plan (a Microsoft Word document), please click here!

Finally, we highly recommend that you install a filter on your computer. If you go through this course and fall to Internet pornography after Day 7, your mentor will require you to place some filter on your computer before you continue the course.

Friend, we are serious about helping you to be free from pornography. Setting Captives Free has found an excellent filter that includes "instant notification" to whomever you choose, via email and/or phone, if pornography sites are visited. For more information about this filter, please click here

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

 What does "feasting" mean?

"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.

It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

Yes是   No 否

so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

Yes是 No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

Yes是 No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
