For the next few days, we'll examine a pivotal teaching of the Scriptures: grace is what saves us, sanctifies us and will ultimately glorify us.

The grace of God is responsible for rescuing us from pornography and all sexual sin, and for keeping us out of it for the rest of our lives.

The significance of this truth is that grace can do what the law cannot do. In other words, if you're caught in the trap of pornography, you cannot escape through obeying the law.

The law condemns your behavior as sinful, but provides no power to help you stop.

So how do you escape? The grace of God rescues you from the kingdom of the devil and redeems you from slavery to sin.

"To run and work the law commands, but gives us neither feet nor hands. But better news the gospel brings, it bids us fly and gives us wings." John Bunyan

Are you familiar with the strangle-knot? It's a knot commonly used for snares, because the more force that is applied from inside the loop, the more firmly the knot prevents the opening of the loop.

The harder you pull against the knot, the tighter the knot becomes! The only way to break free of such a snare is to cut the rope with a knife.

Sexual sin is a strangle-knot for us. All of our own efforts to break free from sin only serve to increase its death-grip on us.

The truth is that it is the grace of God alone that can break our bondage and free us from certain death. God's grace is like a knife that frees us from a strangle-knot.

Read through the following Biblical story and answer the questions below.

1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.

3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group

4 and said to Jesus, Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.

5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?

6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.

7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.

8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?

11 No one, sir, she said.

Then neither do I condemn you, Jesus declared. Go now and leave your life of sin. John 8:1-11

Nothing is more humiliating than being caught in an act of disobedience! Whether it's a child with his hand in the cookie jar or an adult driving over the speed limit, we all know the sinking feeling of being caught.

In John 8, a woman is caught in the act of adultery. Let us study her story and learn. (Some of the following questions are taken from Lesson Builder by Logos.)

Question 1

From the first few verses of this passage, what do we know about the character and motive of those who bring this woman to Jesus?

Question 2

How do you think the woman felt when the men made her "stand before the group" and publicly expose her sin?

Question 3

While it is obvious that this woman is guilty, what elements of injustice can you find in this situation?

Note how the Pharisees and scribes continued to press their point. They were not after this woman as much as they were after Jesus. They wanted to "test" Jesus (v. 6), and were hoping to find grounds for accusing him. He is the one they are really after here.

This self-righteous, self-appointed group of Pharisees was acting as judge and jury and wanted to stone this woman, but don't be mistaken: their ultimate goal was the death of Jesus. They were filled with self-righteous hatred toward Jesus. They kept stressing their point—"They persisted in asking Him" (v. 7a), keeping the pressure on him. "Come on, tell us, teacher, what do You say? Will you kill the woman, or kill the Law?"

Scripture makes no definitive statement as to what Jesus wrote in the dirt. However, here is something to think about: there are only two other times in Scripture where God is shown to write something with His hand or finger, and both times what was written condemned those to whom He wrote.

The first time was when God wrote the Law on tablets of stone; the second time was when He wrote on King Belshazzar’s wall. Consider Job 13:26: "For you write down bitter things against me and make me inherit the sins of my youth."

Question 4

The Pharisees and teachers were often very self-righteous. Why were they so determined to stone the woman?

Question 5

Was Jesus condoning the woman's sin by not condemning her? Please explain.

As these religious leaders persisted in questioning him, Jesus stood up and invited any one among them who was sinless to throw the first stone. By this statement they could not possibly say Jesus rejected the law. Jesus specifically told them to throw the first stone. Go ahead, you're right, the Law says stone her. She is guilty. Now, who among you is sinless?

Question 6

Why are we tempted to condemn other people's sins, rather than our own?

David wrote, "Amazingly, when I was so deep in sexual sin, I would condemn a man for sexual sin, yet I would have no problem lusting over girls at the swimming pool.

Apparently it was easier for me to throw stones at others than to consider my own sins."

Question 7

How would you describe Jesus' attitude toward the woman? (Notice that Jesus was the only one who talked to her; the others only talked about her.)

Jesus' last statement is important: "Neither do I condemn you..." This is pure grace, Friend. The law required punishment and death for the woman caught in the act of adultery, but Jesus forgave her and gave her life. The woman didn't make any excuses (v. 11).

She was guilty, and she knew it; she needed grace, but she did not deserve it. "The wages of sin is death." "The soul that sins will surely die." She couldn't earn it. She was a spiritual pauper in need of the riches of God's grace.

Jesus said to her "Neither do I condemn you; go your way; from now on sin no more" (v. 11). Let those words soak in: "Neither do I condemn you."

How could Jesus offer such a sinner "no condemnation?" He did it the same way He does for us. He knew He was going to the cross to die for her sins. A helpless sinner doesn't merit forgiveness and can't earn it.

For while we were still helpless [sinners], at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.... God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6,8

To every guilt-ridden sinner who puts his trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior, God whispers "Neither do I condemn you."

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1

But Jesus' statement of grace is immediately followed up by an admonition to "Go and sin no more." The theological terms for Jesus' instruction here are "justification" and "sanctification."

Justification is "Neither do I condemn you." Sanctification is: "Go and sin no more." The order of these statements is crucial—He didn't say, "Go and sin no more, neither do I condemn you," or "Clean up your act and then I will forgive you." Jesus uses grace as the motive for pure living.

Question 8

If you were the woman in this story, how would you feel as you left Jesus' presence?

Course member Mary writes: "I have been like that woman, and have experienced Him saying to me, ‘Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.’

It is such a wonderful experience to simply admit my sin, accept His love and forgiveness, and walk away knowing that He loves me and is helping me to stop sin."

How does this apply to your struggle with sexual impurity, Friend? Viewing pornography is heart adultery. Jesus said, "Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28)

Let's call it what it is—it is not just "stumbling" or "slipping up," it is spiritual adultery of the heart. We are adulterers—guilty before God, condemned before men, caught in the act. If you're married and viewing pornography, you're committing heart adultery against your spouse, as well.

And yet, there is a place where adulterers can go to find pardon and forgiveness. It is Jesus, who "justifies the wicked" (Romans 4:5)

Jesus, who was "pierced for our transgressions, and crushed for our iniquities." It's also in Jesus that we find grace to live differently, for the grace of God (not the law of God) teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness (Titus 2:12)Pure grace—we need it; He has it.

In summary, a snare was set for this woman; she was in a strangle-knot with no way to break free. But Jesus cut the knot with the knife of pure grace. He can do the same for us!

Question 9
Do you know the life-transforming power of God's grace? Do you know the joy of having an Advocate like Jesus Christ? Tomorrow, we will examine further aspects of the grace of God, but for now, share your thoughts about this lesson.

Thoughts for today:
I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more. Isaiah 43:25

John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying,

"This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:15-17

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?"

Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.

It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

Yes是   No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
