Today's lesson begins with a story that will illustrate what we're studying. I've trimmed out a few minor details like the airline name:

Misloaded Douglas DC-8 Pitches up Excessively on Takeoff, then Stalls and Strikes the Ground

The cargo was not loaded aboard the airplane according to the airlines instructions. As a result, the flight crew inadvertently used a horizontal-stabilizer-trim setting that was not correct for the airplane’s aft center of gravity.

"On Aug. 7, 1997, ------ ----- (airline name) Flight 101, a Douglas DC-8-61, stalled on takeoff and struck the ground approximately 3,000 feet (915 meters) from the end of Runway 27R at Miami (Florida, U.S.) International Airport. The three flight crewmembers, a security guard aboard the airplane and one person on the ground (a motorist) were killed.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in its final report, said, ‘The accident resulted from the airplane being misloaded to produce a more aft center of gravity and a correspondingly incorrect stabilizer-trim setting that precipitated an extreme pitch-up at rotation.’

"NTSB said that the probable causes of the accident were: The failure of ---- ---- (airline name) to exercise operational control over the cargo-loading process; [and,] the failure of [---- -----, a freight-forwarding company] to load the airplane as specified by ----- ---- (airline name).

"’Contributing to the accident was the failure of the [U.S.] Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to adequately monitor (airline name) operational-control responsibilities for cargo loading and the failure of FAA to ensure that known cargo-related deficiencies were corrected at ----- ----- (airline name),’ said NTSB.

"’The captain, 42, was hired by ----- ----- (airline name) in October 1993. He had 12,154 hours of flight time, including 2,522 hours as a (airline name) DC-8 captain.

NTSB said that in 1995 the FAA suspended the captain's airman certificate and medical certificate for 30 days because he had failed to report a revocation of his motor-vehicle driver's license.

FAA records indicated that the captain was convicted for misdemeanor drunk driving in California in 1986 and convicted for driving under the influence in Arizona in 1994,’ said NTSB." Flight Safety Foundation.

As an airline pilot, I often read up on the "how’s and why's" of aircraft accidents. I do this to try to learn what happened, and how I might prevent something similar from happening to the crew and passengers I carry.

One of the greatest sites for studying aviation accidents is Flight Safety Foundation's Accident Prevention website at http://www.flightsafety.org/ap_home.html. As I read through the accident reports, one thing I have noticed is that there is usually an accident "chain" with many links that make up that chain.

In the above accident, what "links" in the accident chain can you find? Here are some that I saw:

1.Improper loading of the aircraft by the company contracted to load.

2.Improper monitoring of the loading of the aircraft by the airline.

3.Failure of the FAA to properly monitor the loading operation of the airline.

4.Failure of the FAA to ensure previous known loading problems were corrected.

5.A possible 5th "link" in the accident chain could be the Captain’s known drinking problem.

All the above links in the chain caused the accident of Flight 101, killing a total of five people. What if just one link in the accident chain had been broken?

For instance, what if the FAA, citing known loading problems with the airline, had decided to shut it down until its problems could be corrected? That one break in the chain would have saved the lives of five people.

Friend, you and I have had a problem with pornography or some other form of sexual impurity. If we examine our times of failure, we will always find a chain of events that lead up to the "crash." Here are some of mine:

1.I did not get up early to spend quiet time with the Lord.

2.I had a long day and became tired.

3.My wife and I were at odds over something.

4.My last flight of the day was delayed because of weather.

5.I saw a partially clothed woman at the airport, and I couldn’t get the image of her out of my head.

6.When I got to my hotel room, I turned the TV on and immediately saw an advertisement for a pornographic movie.

Crash!

Over time, I've learned to notice when links in an accident chain are developing, and to break at least one link in order to prevent a pornographic accident.

Now, I rise early to spend time with the Lord, which puts me in a prayerful frame of mind throughout the day. I communicate with my wife and make sure we're acting in loving ways toward each other.

If my day is long, I know I'm headed for trouble—so I begin watching and praying. And finally, I take the TV out of my hotel room and drop it off at my co-pilot's room (this makes for an interesting discussion the next day!).

Let's see how these "accident links" are all present in a particular incident in Scripture.

Lot, the nephew of Abraham, experienced a terrible tragedy. He came to live in a city that was ultimately destroyed by God for its wickedness.

Lot lost all his possessions, his wife was killed, and he barely escaped with his own life and the lives of his two daughters.

Notice the following passage of Scripture, and see if you are able to spot the links in this developing "accident chain." Write out each link below.

8 So Abram said to Lot, Lets not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers.

9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.

10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)

11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:

12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD. Genesis 13:8-13

8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim

9 against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar-four kings against five.

11 The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away.

12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.Genesis 14:8-12

11四王就把所多玛和蛾摩拉所有的财物,并一切的粮食都掳掠去了;

Note: Eventually Sodom was destroyed by the fire of God's wrath.

Break the Chain

Friend, to stop a pornographic accident, it is important for us to break a link in the chain that leads to sin. If we remove one link, we won't crash. Had there been proper supervision in the loading of the cargo aircraft in Miami, five people would not have died.

What if Lot had broken chain link number one, or even number two? These are the links I saw in the story of Lot:

1.Lot and Abraham quarrel and separate (Genesis 13:8-11).

What if Lot and Abraham had worked out their differences instead of separating?

(Exercise caution in separating from fellow believers for any reason—even if the reason seems legitimate, as it did in Lot's case! There may come a time when separation is necessary, but weigh the option of separation carefully against the benefits derived from fellowship.)

2.Lot "looked up and saw" the valley of Sodom (Genesis 13:10). What if Lot had not focused on the valley, but on the hill country instead? (Be careful where you focus.)

3.Lot "set out toward" Sodom (Genesis 13:11). Would this "accident" have happened if Lot set out toward the great trees of Mamre, instead of Sodom?

(Be careful of the general direction of your life. We are always moving, either more toward righteousness, or more toward sin.)

4.Lot "pitched his tent near" Sodom (Genesis 13:12). Lot could have broken the "accident chain" even after he separated from Abraham, after he saw and set out toward Sodom, had he simply refused to pitch his tent so close to the filth and wretchedness of Sodom.

(Pitch your tent as far away from sinful traps as you can. We still must influence the world, but we have to watch ourselves—use wisdom and common sense as to how close we should get.)

5. Lot "was living in" Sodom (Genesis 14:12). Notice the progression: Lot separated from Abraham, saw Sodom, set out toward Sodom, pitched his tent near Sodom, and then lived in Sodom.

Next we read he has been taken captive in battle. These may be our steps to destruction as well! We separate from fellowship, see something sinful and focus on it, set out toward it, pitch our tent near it, live in it, and are taken captive by it.

Question 6

问题6

Write out a quick summary of the above five points, just to reinforce the steps that lead to a fall.

Now, let's focus on your accident chain. What are the links? How can you remove one link (or more) and stop the accident? Please describe below your accident chain and your plan to "remove a link."

Question 7

问题7

What has been your accident chain in the past?

Question 8

Will you remove some links in the chain? What links will you remove, and how will you do it?

Question 9

Will you share this plan with someone who can help you implement it, and hold you accountable for it?

Course member Dennis wrote, "The first link in the chain that bound me to porn was the excuse "Everyone is going to sleep, and now I have time to get online and 'check my email.' I would tell my wife that I would only be a moment and, after surfing the web for a couple of minutes, I knew that she would be asleep by then.

The next link was to "accidentally" stumble upon some porn site and say to myself, ‘Well, as long as I'm here...’

"From there, I would bring up deviant porn and the sex story sites, indulging in all manner of wicked fantasies. At a certain point, I would begin to gratify my flesh, and then there was no turning back.

That was always the last link in the chain. The next day, my mind would still be racing with images, and I would again indulge in self-gratification. I repeatedly resolved to break the chain, but I was not strong enough. This was my nightly routine for seven long and frustrating years.

"To break the chain, I have moved the computer to the family room and do not access it after a certain hour. If I have not read my mail, checked the scores, or read the news by a certain time, it has to wait until tomorrow.

Also, now that my wife is aware of my addiction, she is watchful of what is on the screen and holds me accountable. I no longer delete the history file or the temp file. She has full access to the computer,

also. Additionally, when the temptation to "check my email" comes, I immediately turn off the computer and join the family. Already, I feel the strength of the Lord enabling me. I will be victorious by His grace."

Question 10

问题10

How are you doing today?

Scripture to consider for today:

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 1 Peter 5:8-9

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?

"Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible;

it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ.

It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

 Yes是   No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

 Yes是  No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
