You are at war, soldier—it's time to learn how to fight!

Over the next several days, we'll examine the tactics of the enemy of our souls and develop some battle strategies of our own to combat him. Please read the following verses, noting in particular where the enemy wages war on us:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Cor. 10:3-5

Question 1

Friend, from the above verses, where does the devil attack us? In other words, where is the battle fought?

Question 2

What do the above verses call evil thoughts that get lodged in our minds?

Soldiers, we are in a battle, and the battlefield is the mind. The enemy desires to set up "thought strongholds" in our minds—thoughts that won't go away, that eventually demand we act upon them.

These strongholds are whatever is opposed to "the knowledge of God." Here is how one student put it on his enrollment form: "I want to leave behind all forms of sexual impurity that pervade my life.

First, the endless and repetitive pornographic thoughts I have throughout the day which lead into viewing more pornography and then, of course, to self-gratification."

Here's how it works in practice: everything is going just fine, and all of a sudden a pornographic picture comes into our thoughts. It might be from a pornographic movie we watched years ago, or it might be a more recent image we have seen over the Internet. Soldiers, this is the beginning of a thought-stronghold. This image that is lodging itself in the mind is in opposition to the knowledge of God.

After all, the knowledge of God is whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4:8)—and that is what should constantly occupy our thoughts. The evil one is setting that pornographic image up in our minds to turn us away from God. This image and the emotions it conjures up may well become a stronghold of the devil and lead us into sexual sin.

Or it might look like this: if our particular downfall is Internet chatting, we could pray all day against going to the chat groups, but all of a sudden thoughts come into our heads: "Everybody loves you there!

Somebody is just waiting to see your name appear on his or her screen. They need your gentle caring and loving concern, as well as your quick wit and romantic style. In fact, somebody there will no doubt want to have cyber-sex with you, and is probably waiting for you right now."

Though we try to push these thoughts away, and may be successful the first or second time, eventually the thoughts get stuck in our minds, and we are soon involved in sin.

Question 3

问题3

What's a temptation scenario that is common to you?

We must understand that our minds are a battleground. And more importantly, we need to possess "divine weapons" and know how to use them. The enemy wages war on our minds. Read the following verses:

The mind of sinful man is death... Romans 8:6

The mind of sinful man is death because the devil has numerous thought-strongholds there. Sinful man is fixated on sinful thoughts, and the wages of sin is death.

In our case, pornographic images or impure memories may totally overwhelm and control our minds.

The sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law nor can it do so. Romans 8:7

The sinful mind is saturated with sinful thoughts. When God's law requires it to think pure, lovely, truthful thoughts, it is totally unable to do so.

The sinful mind is filled with sinful images and bent on fulfilling the desires of the flesh.

Many live as the enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.Philippians 3:19

Friend, our minds are the battleground. If the devil can just get our minds fixed on "earthly things," he knows that we will be "enemies of the cross" and therefore enemies of God.

28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice" Romans 1:28-29

28 他们既然故意不认识神,神就任凭他们存邪僻的心,行那些不合理的事;

People who do not retain the knowledge of God are given over "to a depraved mind" to do what should not be done.

But I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. Romans 7:23

In this verse, we see again that the war is waged against the mind; when the enemy is successful, we become prisoners of sin.

Question 4

Now it's time for personal reflection, Friend. What experiences with sexual impurity have made you feel like your mind was a battlefield?

Have you felt, at times, that you were unable to control your mind? What "strongholds" have you experienced in the past?

Tomorrow, we will examine the resources with which we may fight. Meanwhile, we need to be aware of where the battlefield is: the thought life.

The devil gets access to our hearts through "thought strongholds." Friends, please be on guard!

"Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8

Here are two things we can do to combat thoughts that get lodged in our minds:

1.Refuse to have access to any further pornography. This will stop the accumulation of any additional pornographic images that would drag us into sin.

Without cutting off access to inappropriate images, there really won't be any victory in this area. Please review Matthew 5:29-30, Romans 13:14 and Joshua 7:13.

2.Immerse ourselves in Scripture. Taking in the Water of the Word has the effect of washing away images that remain in the mind. Please review Joshua 1:8 and Psalm 1:3.

Over time, as we continue to put these two principles into practice, we will become free from all strongholds of the enemy.

Question 5

问题5

Please list the two principles that will rid the mind of pornographic images:

Course member Dave wrote, "In the past, I sought pornography on the net and through the medium of print and video. I also frequented a strip club. This has left a sinful thought process imprinted on my mind.

When meeting women, whether at work, on the street or even in church, I find myself invariably viewing them as an object of sexual desire.

I know this is wrong, but it sometimes seems that I have no control over my thoughts, like an old TV I had the tuner which was going bad and kept switching channels.

It wouldn't stay on the selected channel for more than a few minutes, then it defaulted back to channel 2. My thought process is like that at present though, with God's help, it is changing."

Course memberJohn wrote, "I have had many times that I would start to think about looking at pornography and, from the mental picture, would gratify my flesh."

Course member Hans wrote, "The images that I have experienced pop up in my mind at the worst times for me, and the best times for the adversary. He and his henchmen have studied me, and know when to strike hard. I have not,

by the grace of God, gone any farther than pornography and self-gratification, but this alone has given Satan a stronghold on my whole being. I have become limited or damned by this. I am slowly turning to God and asking him to fight the battle. I cannot win alone; I have tried for 15 years.

The images and fantasies are the strongholds where Lucifer twists my logic and makes my addiction seem like a comfortable old friend. He is loosing the fight, however, as day by day I feel more and more freedom."

Course member Jim wrote, "When we fight Satan, it is in our minds. We take down strongholds that he has put there. I have experienced this for a long time now, and even more since I started this course. Satan does not want me to be free from porn,

and he is far from being done with me. I have fallen recently, and day 60 is a long way away. God will get me to that point, because it is His will; I am sure of this.

However, Satan will continue to attack. I would be a fool to think that, after 60 days, Satan will just leave me alone. But he will be a lot weaker than he is now. God has been mighty in my life recently, and this is just the beginning. All of this has happened in my mind; in the spiritual realm.

It is a war, and we are in the midst of it. I will not become a casualty of war. I will not become MIA or POW. I am going to pray that GOD will not let that happen. And, because I know that that is HIS will, HE will do it. I have taken a few bullets, but no more. Best of all, we know who wins the war. GOD DOES!"

Denniswrote, "The paragraph starting with "Here's how it works..." is exactly describing the battlefield in my mind.

I have pictures in my head of movies I watched as a teenager, and pictures I have seen on the Internet. Until I started this study and began to work on filling my mind with the things of God, when one of those images flashed into my head, it was all a downhill slide from there.

Something would remind me of something I had seen and I would start "teasing" myself on the Internet - "Just a peek" is how I would convince myself it was okay.

But, of course, that never worked. Even if I were satisfied temporarily with "just a peek," within a day or two I would give in completely. It's when Satan reminds me of the things I have done and seen that I feel the temptation the strongest to give in again."

Scriptures to consider for today:

No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 2 Timothy 2:4

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?"

Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible;

it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives.

It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

Yes是   No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.

Were you free from pornography since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No否

Were you free from self-gratification since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No 否

Were you free from sexual immorality since you did the last lesson?

Yes是  No否

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, tell us what led to your fall. If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may use this area for questions or additional comments.
