Today, we'll study a passage that gives us a better understanding of how salvation works and how it relates to pornography and sexual impurity. It follows on the heels of yesterday's lesson, which taught us we are "new creations in Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Let's get started!

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. Genesis 1:1-2

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

Friend, we are new "creations" in Jesus. I am not a "refurbished" Mike; I am totally new. God does not shave caterpillars; he makes butterflies! It's useful to study the biblical account of earth's creation, for in it we see how God has saved us.

Notice the three things said of the earth in the beginning. It was:

1. Formless

1. 混沌

2. Empty

2. 空虚

3. In darkness

4.If we look at Genesis 1, verse 9, we see a fourth description of the earth: submerged underneath water

Do you see how this relates to us as new creations in Christ? We, too, at one time were

·Formless: this same word is translated “confusion” in Deuteronomy 32:10.

·Empty: why did we turn to pornography and immorality, anyway? Probably because we were trying to "fill a void." Emptiness in heart and life is the condition of all who are trapped in sexual sin.

Instead of being "filled with all the fullness of God" and having an overflowing cup, as David did, we were inwardly empty, lonely, yearning people.

Course member Michael wrote, "I wanted to be filled with love and companionship but, by looking at porn, alienated myself from any hope of ever finding a lasting love.

My heart was empty and, I found the further into porn I went, the further I was from satisfaction and fullness."

·In darkness: can you remember the darkness that pervaded your life in pornography and impurity? The absence of light, wisdom, direction, and illumination all characterized my 15-year addiction to pornography and immorality.

·Submerged underneath the water: we were dead and buried under the water of our sin. We were lost, sunk, submerged, and dead.

This is a perfect description of our lives when we were when trapped in sin. We were "formless," confused, empty, in darkness and buried under the water of our sin.

Course member Dennis wrote, "When I was viewing pornography, I was very confused. I struggled with the uncertainty of my personal salvation. I thought, ‘How could I enjoy this sin and still call myself a believer?’ I tried to rationalize my sin, and that only led to more confusion.

Empty: I can truly say that I felt dead inside. I felt nothing, emotionally or spiritually. I was a shell of what God had created anew.

Darkness: I had more in common with sinful men, than with believers. I was so degenerate that I was not in fellowship with God or men. My heart was only darkness continually and I hated the light, although I claimed to love it. I was a hypocrite.

Submerged: I was drowning in my sin. I put my hand up for help, but the people I was swimming with just waved back. They were drowning, too, not waving. Thank God for rescuing me."

Course member Tim wrote, "When I was deep into it, it consumed me. A good portion of my time was spent in the pursuit of pornography."

Next, God said let there be light. It is the Word of God that brings light. Notice this verse:

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:130

Friend, if you are saved, there was a time in your life that you were in darkness. This may have been when you were in pornographic and sexual slavery.

But then you began having an interest in Scripture, and you were drawn to Jesus Christ. He spoke light into your heart through His Word, dispelling your sin and darkness. And now you are becoming addicted to God's Word and are receiving illumination, understanding, and wisdom (light).

The Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, applied Genesis 1:1-3 in this fashion. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:6:

For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." 2 Corinthians 4:6

It is the same God who spoke light into darkness in creation, Who illuminates our hearts with Jesus Christ in salvation.

So we were, indeed, confused, empty, in darkness, and buried in sin. But the Holy Spirit was "hovering" over us and God said, "Let there be light." And the Word brought light into our hearts.

And God said, 'Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.' And it was so. Genesis 1:9

This is where it begins to get truly exciting! The earth, which was submerged, has now come bursting up through the water—much like a resurrection. What was once buried is now alive, and is about to begin producing fruit!

Friend, this is you, if you are in Christ. Once empty, in darkness, buried in sin, but now raised from the dead, full of the glory of God, enjoying the light of Jesus Christ. And then:

And God said, 'Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, according to its kind on the earth." And it was so.Genesis 1:11

Now the earth is alive and producing fruit. I'm not going to comment on this verse; instead I'll ask you to do so.

Question 5

How does the above verse apply to you and salvation?

Course member Troy wrote, "In hindsight, I can see that NO part of my life was unaffected by my use of pornography and my submission to my lustful thoughts. There were parts of me, intellectual, spiritual, and physical that were wasted on pornography and lust.

These parts of me have been released from the slavery of lust, just as my soul has been freed from the damnation of sin. These parts are now able to join the rest of me in celebrating life and the salvation Christ has freely offered to me."

Question 6

问题6

John 15:5 states, "I am the Vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me, you can do nothing." How does that verse apply to what we are studying?

Now you can share your testimony with others in a very short and simple manner: "I was empty, in darkness, and buried under the waters of sin; but God spoke light into my heart, raised me from the dead, filled me with His Son, and is making me fruitful." Amen!

One last point: Did you notice that it was on the third day that the "resurrection" of the earth happened? There was initial chaos, darkness, emptiness and death... and then, on the third day, there was a resurrection into life and fruitfulness!

Likewise, Jesus emptied Himself for us amidst the chaos of His crucifixion. Then He hung on the cross in darkness and died for our sins. But on the third day, He arose from the dead, victorious over sin, death, hell and the grave.

You and I are the fruit of His suffering. We are the living souls He died to produce, and we carry precious seed to give life to others.

I'm now going to share several course member comments that show that our experiences while "submerged" in the darkness of pornography and sexual sin are common:

Course member Roy wrote, "I hope the feelings I have do not constitute pride. But it seems like I need to get to know myself all over again. This new person is one I definitely like better than the old - new, fresh, likeable.

My wife and I kept our grandkids yesterday, and I actually felt like entering into their lives more than usual. Just being myself, and talking to each one of them was so neat. I actually wanted to just be with them.

So, I've learned that self-gratification and porn certainly do dim the joy and light in one's heart, and bruises one's desire for living. Thanks for your ministry, and your loving concern."

Course member Joe wrote, "This very much describes my past. I was submerged in the deep waters of pornography. I am now above those waters. The Lord has saved me from drowning, and from a horrible death/destruction, as in the case of Ted Bundy.

I don't know where I would have ended up if I had gone further down, but I do know it would have been through the path to destruction. The Lord saved me and turned me to the opposite direction of this path."

Course member Micah wrote, "I was drowning in life, without God's guidance. But now I feel as if I am walking on water."

Better to Marry

Dear Jake,

Jake,

In 1st Corinthians, chapter 7, Paul was making an argument for being single and abstinent, as he, himself was.

I believe that Paul (and this is just Paul, not God) wanted everyone to stay single so that their ties to marriage would not hamper their work for Christ. (note the Catholic Church's take on this.)

However he was eagerly giving us permission to marry. And he recognized the temptations fought by a person who was trying to stay away from sex. I expect that Paul knew this temptation first-hand.

But to your question: Yes, there are situations where marriage is the answer. However, we have to keep our own experience handy to be able to apply the scripture correctly.

We, who have "been there and done that" know how many men (like myself) took their "habit" into marriage with them, only to have it re-appear after the honeymoon was over and haunt them and their wives for years.

So, Paul wasn't talking about everyone or every situation; we know that.

if they can’t control themselves, they should go ahead and marry. It’s better to marry than to burn with lust. 1 Cor 7:9 (NLT)

Jake, I have worked with men who did fit the profile for 1 Cor 7:9. Here is how I believe the scripture is intended to apply: He is not bound up in pornography anymore, and he and his fiance are almost ready to get married.

She is not bringing into the marriage any baggage about being afraid of having sexual intimacy with a husband, and he only falls every so often to self-gratification.

They are having trouble keeping their hands off of each other when together. That's a good example of when it is better to marry than to burn with lust.

Jake, I have suggested that solution more than once for the same reason as Paul suggested in 1 Cor 7:9

About a year ago, I had such a student. He and she both lived in Europe. They were in two separate cities, because she was in school. I urged him to hurry up the wedding date.

There were all kinds of objections including family wanting to be involved and her being off at school, and more. But they talked via Skype, and he fanticized about her, and she liked it. That needed to stop. So I gave him the scripture and, well here is some of our

conversation. I've changed his name for privacy:

Hey!

你好!

After negotiations my fiancee and I decided to get married in April instead of July.

Unfortunately we cannot accept your idea on getting married "right now", because we definetely want to have this traditional big celebration ceremony which we need to plan and organize quite a bit. And regardless for the time being we're having long distance relationship which doesn't suit too much for marriage.

Thanks for the other tips also.

Sincerely, Joe

Joe

Joe - you certainly can do whatever it is that you and your fiance decide. I'm not the one to decide for you. I only gave you the biblical perspective.

If you two want to do something else, because it's not convenient to get married right now and live together as husband and wife, then you need to talk to God about it, not to me. I've already shared with you what He thinks.

Hey guess what Neill!

I'm getting married in two weeks and I'm extremely thrilled about it! Thanks, bro, for nudging me awake! :)

Sounds good to me, Joe. Is your bride o.k. with that? Have you worked out the details so that you can live together?

Yeah she's fine with it, more than fine to be honest. Everything is alright and we can start to live together almost right after the wedding.

We began that back-and-forth on November 18, 2010. They got married March 1, 2011 instead of July, saving a great deal of burning.

Hope that helps, Jake.

To clarify what the first accountability question means, we have included the following explanation.

What does "feasting" mean?"

Feasting" is more than just reading the Bible; it is a term to express the nourishing of our souls in Jesus Christ. It means that we are sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word and believing it, for the purpose of implementing the truths into our lives. It means we are receiving spiritual nourishment and we are delighting our souls in His grace and truth.

This may be done in reading our Bibles, hearing God's Word preached, interacting with others in the Scriptures, and studying through this course, etc. This definition is at least a start; further explanation is included in the lessons.

Have you been feasting on God's word?

Yes是   No 否

If so, when was the last time you feasted? And how? In other words, how did you enjoy God? Reading? Prayer? Worship? Fellowship? Witnessing?

These next, tough, accountability questions apply to the entire period since you did your last lesson.
