Paramount is in development with a remake of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. The film is being produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter through Disruption Entertainment, with Elizabeth Raposo overseeing for the studio.

The film will, not surprisingly, center around the Exodus story of Moses, and his leading the Jewish people out of Egypt, freeing them from the oppressive rule of the Pharaoh Ramses. Producers are eyeing a writer-director who can give a different take than previous incarnations of the timeless tale.

While there have been numerous adaptations of the Moses story over the years, the most well-known and highly-regarded remains 1956’s The Ten Commandments, directed by Cecil B. Demille and starring Charlton Heston as Moses. Filmed on location in Egypt, Mount Sinai and the Sinai Peninsula, it was the most expensive movie ever made at the time. The gamble paid off, however,as it was lauded as Demille’s greatest achievement in filmmaking (it would be his last film, as well) and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

An updated version of The Ten Commandments wouldn’t be Disruption’s first foray into the Old Testament, as Parent served as a producer  on 2012’s Noah. That film, directed by Darren Aronofsky, found the Black Swan director managing his largest budget to-date at $125 million, but eventually grossed over $350 worldwide. That equated to a solid return for Disruption, and seems to have spurred interest in the Commandments remake, which our sources say has become something of a passion project for the shingle.

Another recent adaptation of the Moses story, 2014’s Exodus: Gods and Kings from Ridley Scott, revealed the massive audience for the modern religious epic. As with Noah, Exodus underperformed at the domestic box office,but doubled its money in the international markets, further bolstering the idea that big budget, biblical dramas still possess a powerful global appeal.
